Most Dementia Cases Are Alzheimer's. My Wife Kathleen Has Fronto-Temporal Dementia. Anyone Else In The Group Whose Loved-one Has FTD?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

The recent news coverage of Bruce Willis's Fronto-Temporal Dementia (FTD) diagnosis included references to the fact that it is a rare form of dementia. Since my wife has FTD, I was interested. Depending on the reference source, FTD is only responsible for between less than 3% up to 20% of dementias. But it is the primary source of dementia for people between the ages of 45 and 64. In that sense, I guess my wife is somewhat lucky that her first symptoms didn't appear until she was 67.

Very sorry to hear. Physically, Kathleen can still do most things (including 1 mile walks together) but she can do very little (including brush her teeth) without coaching.

Why Do I Hear So Many Concerns About Health Care Providers Who Don't Understand The Needs Of Someone With Dementia?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

I'm puzzled. Almost everyday I read something about how difficult it can be to work with health care providers due to their misunderstanding of the needs of people with dementia and their caregivers. Over the past 9 years my husband has experienced at least 5 hospitalizations, 10+ ER visits, and the route care of more than 10 medical specialists. Through all of that, I can think of only two times that this has been an issue. In one case, after gently requesting clarification there were no… read more

Anyone Have Experience With Haldol? And How Do I Tell If He Is Agitated Or Just "active"?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

We started Dad on low does at night to help him not fall out of bed, and to get a better night's sleep, with less agitation. Seems to have worked great.

During the day, Dad gets into periods where he counts and moves his arms, hands and maybe even his legs some (wheelchair bound). Hospice at the AL center suggested that this is a sign of agitation and they recommend more Haldol. I don't want him agitated, but I also don't want to just add pills to keep him somewhat sedated. I feel like his… read more

Do You Ever Doubt Your Loved Ones Diagnosis?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

When my husband is out of sorts, I think okay, this really is happening. But sometimes (a lot here lately), I wonder could this all be a mistake? Could something else have been going on 6months ago and now it’s over? My husband has been on Aricept for about 5 or 6 months and since July 2nd on the highest dosage. Does he really need it anymore? I am so confused and I don’t want him labeled with something he doesn’t have! Has anyone else ever went through this doubt or know of a misdiagnosis being… read more
