Why Do I Hear So Many Concerns About Health Care Providers Who Don't Understand The Needs Of Someone With Dementia?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

I'm puzzled. Almost everyday I read something about how difficult it can be to work with health care providers due to their misunderstanding of the needs of people with dementia and their caregivers. Over the past 9 years my husband has experienced at least 5 hospitalizations, 10+ ER visits, and the route care of more than 10 medical specialists. Through all of that, I can think of only two times that this has been an issue. In one case, after gently requesting clarification there were no… read more

Young Doctor's are the worst. I took Don because of possible Cancer spots. Our Doc.. got right in hubby's face and said someone from our clinic told me that they saw Don driving our car. She said Don't you remember that you are not to drive? DHAAAAAAA , I spoke up and said.... The man has Dementia . He can't even remember what he had for lunch. You need to talk to me about shit like this , not him. Come on Don , I'll find someone else to look at your spots. And we left.

@A myALZteam Member, I think you are on to something - compassion, love, and kindness, plus a bit of common sense goes a long way in caring for someone with dementia. Knowledge is powerful when added to these but knowledge alone is not sufficient.

Oh my, so painful to hear. My Dad was difficult towards the end too. I am so, so sorry you are having to go through this Debra. I know it HURTS. I felt that kind of pain when my son was going through terrible addiction to drugs. I hurt and could hardly walk or function. I know this is not an alcoholic or drug addiction, but I would suggest anyone having this type of hurt, watching an Alzheimer patient go through the hard times, to read Sarah Young's book "Jesus Calling" which are daily inspirational messages, or even a book I have from Al-Anon, called "Courage to Change" which would not work for every situation we have, but is very encouraging in learning how to deal with what we go through. You can probably find them on Amazon or a book store. Courage to change saved me life.

Medical schools do not teach classes specifically related to dementia and Alzheimer's disease, unless something has recently changed. Hopefully, the Alzheimer Association is working on that issue. I find myself teaching my general practitioner about the disease. I even argue with her about choices in medicines and what is going on with me, along with depression/anxiety medications. It is very frustrating.
