What is the difference between vascular dementia and Alzheimer's?

My mother has Dementia and my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's last summer. Is there a way to find out if I have early stage Dementia/Alzheimer's?

I took a module course through Wicking Dementia Centre. The course is called: "Understanding Dementia"
There are 7 modules and one must pass a test at the end of each module before moving to the next module

Does anyone have any good information on this? I find conflicting information that I read as if there is a vascular component, avoiding cholesterol based plaques is recommended, but what if there is no heart history and your doctor is keeping his cholesterol really low, around 100? Maybe I'm just grasping at straws.
