Members shared a wide range of experiences with Donepezil for Alzheimer's in response to a question about the medication. Several members noted no side effects and some memory improvement, while others described challenges like stomach upset, migraines, nightmares, and in one serious case, a slow heart rate requiring an ER visit. A recurring theme was that Memantine is often used alongside or instead of Donepezil, and that taking Donepezil with food in the morning helped reduce side effects for some.

My mother was on donepezil for a while. She developed bradycardia (slow heart rate) and was desaturating (not fully filling her blood with oxygen) and had to be seen in the emergency room after taking it for a few weeks. We were switched to memantine afterwards, which is typically used for moderate rather than early Alz. She had no reaction to that and has been on it for several years.

I went on it several months and happy to say no side effects. Husband feels memory shows some improvement at this time as it relates to day to day conversations, events, upcoming plans, calls I need make.

Sadly my husband refuses to even see his neurologist any more...hoping in time he will.come around. Until then, patience and perseverance as each day progresses. So for us, zero decisions! I had looked into the infusions; however, the possible effects were terribly disturbing as well as the proactive MRI's would have been way too much for my husband. And of course at this point Dave would not have agreed. Unfortunately not quite sure if Donepezil has been effective. One can hope...

My husband was experiencing some side effects but after some research he started taking it in the morning after he ate breakfast and the side effect went away
