Talking to a loved one about moving to memory care can be one of the hardest conversations to have. There's no perfect script, but there are ways to make it a little easier.

Here are some helpful tips:

- Lead with love — remind them how much they mean to you and that this decision comes from a place of care
- Be clear and simple — explain what will happen and when, using straightforward language
- Show them photos of where they'll be living so it feels less unknown
- Go slowly — give them plenty of time to take in what you're saying
- Stay calm — they may react with fear, anger, or confusion; try to respond with patience and empathy
- Redirect if needed — if the conversation becomes too upsetting, it's okay to pause and try again later Once they've moved in, keeping familiar routines and offering frequent reassurance can make a big difference. A myALZteam member shared that reminding their loved one often that they are safe, who they live with, and that they are loved helped ease the transition.

It's also worth preparing yourself emotionally. Lean on family, friends, or a support group — this is hard for caregivers too, and you deserve support as well.
