It's really hard to watch a loved one struggle with vision changes, especially when the eyes themselves are healthy. Alzheimer's can affect how the brain processes what the eyes see, leading to several types of vision difficulties.

Common Alzheimer-related vision changes include:

- Peripheral vision loss – trouble seeing things to the side or below
- Color vision changes – difficulty telling similar colors apart
- Poorer night vision – struggling in low-light settings
- Contrast sensitivity – harder to distinguish objects from their surroundings Here are some practical ways to help at home:

- Keep spaces well-lit – good lighting makes a big difference, especially at night
- Reduce clutter – a tidy space lowers confusion and fall risk
- Use high-contrast colors – brightly colored plates, cups, and tablecloths help with meals
- Communicate face-to-face – speak directly in front of your loved one at close range
- Use verbal cues – describe what's happening to help them navigate
- Try non-visual activities – audiobooks, music, and dancing are great alternatives

A myALZteam member shared: "I played audiobooks for my mother just to stimulate her mind. She enjoyed lots of music that seemed to brighten her mood."

Even though the eyes are healthy, annual eye exams are still worthwhile, as many tests don't require verbal responses.
