Yes, it’s not easy to get enough sleep while doing caregiver jobs along with shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry, making and keeping all the appointments, keeping track of and picking up scripts, feeding and walking dogs, maintaining inside and outside of the house, doing all the required financial stuff, communicate with children and grandchildren, get the mail, and keep track of Amazon orders and deliveries. Thankfully I’m retired.

Sleep problems are very common with Alzheimer's, affecting an estimated 25% to 50% of people depending on the stage. The good news is there are several practical strategies that can help improve nighttime rest.
Here are some helpful approaches to try:
- Stick to a daily routine — consistent meal times, activities, and bedtimes help reinforce the body's internal clock
- Stay active during the day — aim for 20–30 minutes of light exercise (like walking or gardening) a few times a week, but not within 4 hours of bedtime
- Limit daytime napping — short, early naps are okay, but long or late naps can disrupt nighttime sleep
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol — even small amounts can disrupt sleep patterns significantly
- Keep days balanced — not too busy, not too quiet; overstimulation can cause confusion and exhaustion
- Get natural light exposure — time near a window or outdoors during the day helps the body recognize day vs. night When it comes to sleep medications, they are generally not recommended for people with Alzheimer's because they can increase the risk of confusion and falls. Always speak with a doctor before trying any supplements or medications for sleep.
A myALZteam member shared a helpful tip: "I try to get Dad to be more active during the day with light gardening and doing projects in the yard. I find he is much happier being active during the day — less cat naps and, as a result, he sleeps better and longer at night."
If sleep problems persist, it's worth speaking with a healthcare provider who can help identify patterns and suggest personalized solutions.

We started giving my mom melatonin about an hour before bed and it has helped. She sleeps the whole night

Speak to your doctor and get her checked. We had issues with my husband. He was up all night off and on. Found out he had restless legs and sleep apnea. He is on two meds now and only wakes up once per night. Your ability to sleep is important too. It is tough to functions without good rest.
