Hi JoAnn - there are lots of reasons that your husband could be falling, some of them have to do with the progression of the dementia, but there can be other causes as well. He could have vertigo, fluctuating blood pressure issues, weakened muscles, neuropathy in his feet or legs. Or it could be that his brain is struggling to "locate him in space," meaning that he can't tell the distance between where he is and the things around him. Preventing falls can be really hard but is important, especially because falls can accelerate the pace of other health issues. Do you think your husband might be ready to start using a walker, cane or wheelchair to get around? Even starting just by using a wheelchair or a transport chair when you leave the house might give you some peace of mind to help keep him safe. This can be a tough transition! Sending hugs and support!❤️
I have a balance problem. The last year I notice I need to slow down because of it. I also discovered I have developed s verbal vision problems such as ptosis in my left eye and my right eye does not track and coordinate with my left eye. So you may want to see if he has vision changes that cause a balance problem. Good partner for noticing and seeking help. Hugs.
My husband loves sweets too
My husband is really into sweets. I try to limit them since I am sure not healthy and he has stopped eating much for dinner. He will go straight to the cookie jar from the table. Has also got to where he wants ice cream. He has never cared much for it but now he wants it all the time.
My husband has a disease called Myasthenia Gravis which is an autoimmune disease that causes the messages from his brain not to get translated to his mussels. I don't know too much about it. But it is what has caused him not to be able to walk. He was referred to a neurologist for the diagnosis. He has had that for about five years before he was diagnosed with A/D. I am not sure if that relates to your husband's problems at all.
