Is It “normal” For Alzheimer’s Patients To Sleep A Lot?

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭
Tunkhnnock Pa

My husband sleeps 18-20 hours at a time. I wake him and make him get out of bed to feed him and give him his meds and while I am cleaning up in the kitchen he is back in the bedroom and sound asleep. When I tell his physician and Nuerologist about this they just shrugged it off and said it is part of the disease. My husband has severe dementia and hardly communicates with me and basically can’t do anything for himself..

Unfortunately, it is part of the disease for our loved ones to sleep longer. I am not a medical expert but everything I have read references the inordinate amount of sleep that is required as they move from stage to stage in the disease process. I know it is lonely and concerning and please know we are all here for you. Sounds like you are doing a great job. Keep positive!
