My dad keeps spending money on things from the TV that he doesn't need. We had to take over his finances because of overdraft problems. Now he wants to buy our fireplace a cover for our Christmas present because we want to wait until income tax return. WE have a cover but it is temporary. How do we tell him that we don't want it just yet without upsetting him?

We have tried telling him that he doesn't have the money to do it but he thinks he has $4000 in the savings. He hasn't had that since… read more

Members rallied around a family grappling with a father's impulsive spending on TV infomercials despite having his finances taken over, offering creative strategies to protect his finances while preserving his dignity and autonomy. Several members recommended therapeutic fibbing (like saying an item is already ordered), using technology such as Card Valet apps to set spending limits and transaction alerts on debit cards, restricting TV channels with parental controls, and switching to simplified phones with limited dialing capabilities. A recurring theme was balancing financial protection with compassion, recognizing that impulse control and judgment decline with dementia, and finding small compromises that allow loved ones to feel independent while preventing financial harm.

Get comfortable with lying. When he suggests things like the fireplace cover, tell him, "Thank you but we already ordered one and it is being shipped right now." He will likely forget or you come up with another delay or redirection.

Chrissy, is he ordering these things with a phone? Have you thought about getting him a cell phone or landline that can only dial specific numbers? You could also use the parental control on his TV to limit the number of channels that he is able to watch. These things may seem extreme and taking away his choice, but problem solving difficulties and impulsive decision making are not going to get better and setting up protections for him seems like a good idea. Sending hugs and support!❤️

We are POA and have access to the bank online and in person now. We have tried using the for your health speech but he keeps saying if I die I want to die happy. He is ok with us paying the mail bills but he's not ok being told to take it easy on big ticket items. He bought a $500 walker off of tv when his doctor told him to get one. His insurance would have covered the same type without all the extra features had he asked for help.

I do all my dads finances but he does still carry a debit card for when him and his caregiver go grocery shopping. He used it to purchase some things online recently. He has no memory of doing it but I can tell from his computer it was him and not fraud. It was some toys and he shipped them to himself. Anyway, I called the bank and they recommended Card Valet app. I can stop transactions over a certain amount or for certain transactions and I get notifications for any use of the debit card. Much faster and better than me just always looking at his account.
