Mom will ask two minutes after finishing a meal if we had ex. Dinner? Tell her yes several times then she gets up goes into kitchen looking for food. We have to hide bread, bananas anything she regally likes but then she goes into refrigerator eats cheese etc. other day we managed to buy a big bag of pancake mix and my husband put on top of refrigerator. Caught her with a spoon about to dip into bag. Her bottom teeth won’t fit so after her playing and clacking them we finally took them… read more

Members rallied around a caregiver overwhelmed by her mother's constant food-seeking, memory loss, and dangerous behaviors like feeding the dogs, with several sharing similar struggles involving forgotten meals, stealing food, and pet emergencies. Many members strongly encouraged finding a memory care facility soon, offering practical advice such as framing the move as temporary due to the RV downsizing, seeking respite care to prevent burnout, and recognizing that professional care often brings better routines, medication management, and even social engagement. A recurring theme was releasing the guilt of placement, with members emphasizing that choosing a care home is not a failure but a compassionate decision that honors both the person with dementia and the caregiver's own health and marriage.

I think the timing is perfect for finding a community for her. Explain to her the situation with the house and the RV and how small it is. There's simply not enough room for all 3 of you and the dogs. Tell her that she will be more comfortable at a hotel while the house is being built and when it's completed she can come back home. Let her know It's just a temporary situation. Assure her that you will be visiting. Of course in real life by the time your new home is built she will have adapted to the community and be getting great care.

Good luck! You can do this. Her behavior will be better too with the routine she will be on. Meds, food, sleep schedule all monitored. I saw improvement with my mom after we moved her.

3 years ago I stood in your shoes. I know the heartache and exhaustion you are feeling. I tried everything, but mom was so stubborn and confused. We had social services at her door Constantly! Mom convince them at first that we were stealing from her. Then when they visited a few times, told us they would put us in jail for neglect if we didn’t move in with her or take her to our home or put her in a facility. Mom would call the police many times to say we were stealing from her etc. She thought someone was in the attic taking pictures of her, etc. I was the one who moved in with her and tried everything. Tried bringing her to live with us..
Long story short. We found an amazing facility. She still tries to leave to go home Once in awhile, her home is with her mom and dad.

I don’t live nearby the facility, so we FaceTime a lot!

It’s good to see her have a social life with her peers. She even had a boyfriend for a few months.

I still feel quilt that I wasn’t strong enough to care for her by myself. But, I do feel good that she has tender loving care 24/7.
The facility is her home now.
Please know we are all here for you. It’s a great place to come and not be judged for whatever decision you make.

Hugs

Wow...Nasty Mean Bitch...she cannot help it because I am sure she is frustrated just like I get. I have Alzheimer's and my family would never call me that. I pray for her because I know its a terrible thing to go thru.
I will pray for you for more patience. Bless you and your family.

Hi, I can feel your frustration, I get very frustrated/angry at my husband. My only suggestion is you need Respite care. You may avoid a nursing home if you get regular respite. Does your community hav a dedicated day care for adults with Alzheimer’s? Does your healthcare provide maybe a weekend at a nursing home? The respite will be good for your mom too. Good luck and keep in touch here. Big hugs

Good advice from @A myALZteam Member...it seems overdue for mom to be in a care home if she has an official diagnosis and you have needed POAs. This is awful for hubby and you......you both sound close to mental burnout.
