I'd like to connect with others dealing with issues specific to early-onset in a younger spouse. We also have 2 high schoolers at home, (with one making college decisions right now) though finding that same scenario is likely not too common :) though more than welcome. I'm experiencing overwhelm with all the decisions and choices I now make alone. The burden of needing to be "right" with no partner to bounce them off of. The guilt over leaning too hard on my daughters when I am stressed. The… read more

I do not personally talk to my kids about every day concerns. I do tell them about what doctors say. But i connect here to tell my deepest fears. My kids have already researched it. They are more worried about it then me. My next question to my 18 year old will be is why do you think I won’t be able to handle it. I am 67 and have had years of experience handling shitty things unfortunately. Hugs. Its hard but we find a way. We have no choice. After raging about it for a few months i went back to church and just pray. No suffering for anyone.
You have your hands full! Do you have siblings you are close with. I’m finding mine willing to let me bounce those decisions I used to make with my husband off of them. My brother came to the assisted living place with me to look and go over the contract. He also came over when I had to hire contractors to fix my house so I wouldn’t get taken. If not a sibling a close friend perhaps? I pray you find someone close to help you decompress.
Hi! I am 63 and my husband is 66. He was diagnosed with early on set dementia about four years ago and now has moderate Alzheimer’s and has not been able to help with anything or bounce ideas off for quite sometime. If you can find someone just to talk to it would help.
Hi Jackie. Sadly, my dear sisters are 3,000 miles away. Fortunately, we have one couple as friends who are also our legal and financial professionals so they are lifesavers for many of our toughest decisions. I do have some great contractors, but when the job goes awry, that feels like just one more area I "failed" at and it becomes a family joke whenever I say I like a provider or trust someone's idea. Then I get even more scared about the other decisions I might "fail" at .I like your language of just "bouncing ideas off of" because it seems that I'm instead always looking for approval for my nearly done deal because after all I should be taking this all on :)!!! I'm looking to change the environment in which we live to one where the community values we hold are more similar -- and looks like that may bring me closer to my sisters. However, that move can't happen until our hs sophomore is in college. I'm just hoping the worst of this disease doesn't rear its head until then. Thanks for being there.
If you do take the risk and communicate, the reasoning ability is gone and what is supposed to be a simple exchange of conversation becomes a confusing mess.
