Any suggestions on how to get someone to eat. They either think they are too fat or they think they have already eaten and they haven’t. very stubborn and belligerent.

Members shared strategies for managing refusal to eat in loved ones with dementia, a challenge many found deeply frustrating when their loved one insists they've already eaten, claims to be too fat, or becomes belligerent when food is offered. Several members described practical approaches that have worked, including setting consistent meal times marked on clocks or calendars, using smaller plates with limited portions to reduce overwhelm, offering preferred foods like chicken nuggets or dessert when dinner is refused, and quietly leaving the plate on the table without pressing so the person may forget their refusal and begin eating naturally. A recurring theme was the importance of patience, flexibility, and letting go of battles over food, with many members finding success in creative workarounds like offering ice cream after a refused meal or simply placing food in front of their loved one without asking first.

Hi, John. Someone posted about a red plate awhile ago. I saved it just incase, I needed to use this technique. See attached. Hope it works!

John, My husband will do that on occasion -- just take a couple of bites and refuse anymore. Especially at night he doesn't want much but I don't make an issue out of it because he will get it firmly entrenched in his mind that he doesn't want anything to eat. I just say ok and about an hour later I will ask him if he wants some dessert which he always does!
At this point I will not press him to eat however I leave his plate on the table while I finish my meal. Sometimes he will forget and start to eat but not often. Good luck!

My husband does this too. He never turns down ice cream even when he didn't want any dinner. And I just think, why not.
