Her first week there she was able to walk using a walker, feed herself and talk. One month later and she is using a wheelchair because she is very unsteady and doesn’t take steps unless cued to. She needs help eating, she is keeping her eyes closed, even when awake. She leans to the left and drools a lot out of the left side of her mouth. Is this normal with Alzheimer’s to see such a drastic change in one just one month?
Hi, Carolyn, and welcome. Given what you describe I’d be tempted to check a few things with the facility. First would be any changes in medication. If there have been, have them reversed and see what happens. Secondly, what is your mom’s record on bowel movements. My wife would have the behaviours you describe when she was chronically constipated. That could happen with a change in routine / diet. It may well be a coincidence of progression, but worth checking out. Best wishes.
You can’t hardly leave them alone in the hospital .they get confused wth all the commotion and wake up scared and confuse and need to be reassured that everything is ok.
Yes, it is hard for them to be moved, but they do adjust if they are still in the middle stage. I moved my mother from assisted living two months ago to memory care and that has taken its toll on her even though the place is lovely, brighter and the staff is caring.
I don’t know if it is part of Alzheimer’s or not but my sister husband leaned to the left also she didn’t understand at that time.
My mother in law is 93 with dementia. We have her here at home.
A couple years ago her then doctor admitted her to the hospital after a routine visit. That seemed to be too often with him which is why he is no longer her doctor.
When My husband left herecwith her she was mama.
After one night in hospital she seemed very aggravated.
From there shecwas found on her way out of the hospital, behind exposed because she was in her hospital issued gown !
When I was told about that I called her room and she was completely delusional! Telling me there was a man in her room telling her he loves her !
I called the nurses station and told them go check on her!!
5 minutes later my husband had arrived there and she was on her way again to leaving !
When we got her home it took me two days to bring her back to the way she was when she left for a simple doctor appointment.
Familiar surroundings ..familiar people are key I think.
