My dad has late set alz - he has insomnia so his Dr prescribed him 5mg ambian and it's been awesome! He still only sleeps around 5hrs combined with a low dose of xanax(he has major anxiety) but it's so much better than him staying up. I tried the Tylenol pm but it varied on when he'd fall asleep but the ambian is always quick.

Hi there! I've asked my Mom's doctor about given over-the-counter sleep aids to her before bed and was told not to as it worsens symptoms like confusion the next day.

My mom was taking Advil PM and the doctor took her off of it. It increases the possibility of falls and can do damage to organs if taken regularly. We now use Trazodone (100 mg) before bed. Works well.

Don't give them anything without consulting with your doctor(s). If they are waking up during the night, try to keep them awake during the day as much as possible. I have the same problem and if we keep him up he most always sleeps through the night.
