It's wonderful that he's already trying to use a softer voice — that's a real sign of love and effort. And it's completely okay that you needed to cry. Caregiving is hard, and your feelings matter too.

Since unexpected noises are startling him and adding to his anxiety, here are some things that may help: For his hearing aids:
- Encourage consistent hearing aid use — better hearing can reduce anxiety and confusion
- Look for hearing aids with directional microphones, which help focus on one voice (like yours) and reduce distracting background noise
- Ask an audiologist about features suited for someone with Alzheimer's — they can recommend options that aren't too complicated to use

For reducing startling and anxiety:
- Try to minimize sudden loud sounds in the home where possible
- Approach him from the front so he can see you coming
- Use calm facial expressions and gentle hand gestures when speaking
- Give him a heads-up before doing something, like letting him know you're leaving the room It's also worth mentioning his increased anxiety and startle response to his doctor, as they may have additional strategies or resources to help manage these changes at this stage.

You're doing a great job advocating for both of you. 💙
