Incontinence supplies

I am sorry that I only turn to myALZteam when I am in particular need -- I have not been engaged sufficiently to provide support to others.

My wife just had her first incident of incontinence. This was just a bit of daytime urine leakage. I don't know whether this is the beginning of a pattern, but I know that full incontinence will be on its way at some point, so I want to have supplies on hand. Members responded warmly to a caregiver asking about incontinence supplies, offering detailed and practical advice for managing this stage of Alzheimer's care. Several members recommended layering products, such as using a Depends brief with a Poise pad inside to save costs, waterproof mattress covers with disposable pads on top, and barrier cream like BAZA to prevent skin sores. A recurring theme was being proactive by keeping supplies organized and accessible, disposing of soiled items outside immediately for odor control, and checking with insurance, Medicare, or local Alzheimer's organizations to help offset costs.

@A myALZteam Member: Make sure your mattress is covered with a waterproof mattress pad ASAP. You want to PREVENT a urine-soaked mattress from ever happening! For comfort, I put a regular mattress pad on top of the waterproof one. Washable, reusable pads on her side of the bed are good too. Buy and use detergents that are marked for odor removal, so everything doesn’t gradually start to smell like urine.

We are not at that stage so far🙏 only 1-2 accidents but I had gotten waterproof mattress protectors disposable pads and depends already...my motto is be prepared...good luck to us....

Also if Loved One has a favorite chair they always sit in or in wheelchair put disposable pad on it...extra protection when the time comes...also white vinegar diluted with water gets rid of urine smells on clothing, carpets, furniture, laundry...

My mom used depends and put a pad inside them for extra protection. We used a waterproof mattress cover with a disposable pad on top of the sheets. Hubs has only needed the underwear on a few occasions so far.

I’m so glad you reached out, any question is a good question and all are always welcomed. Asking the doctor to see if they can prescribe some of these items will help on costs. This route may take a little longer but if it is covered by insurance it will help the budget quite a bit. Also your local Alzheimers organizations may offer some assistance in sending you supplies, how much and how often will also depend on their budget but if they may also know of other supporting organizations. Being ready will help you so much. Having the gloves and small bags to dispose of the pads or pampers in really helps keeps the process cleaner and odor free
