Members shared deeply personal experiences about letting go of rigid dietary expectations and embracing comfort and joy as their loved ones' Alzheimer's progressed, with the overwhelming consensus being that maintaining weight, ensuring any food intake, and preserving happiness matter far more than perfect nutrition in the face of a terminal disease. Several members described practical adaptations including puréed foods, high-calorie options like ice cream and milkshakes, finger foods to support independence, cutting food into smaller pieces, using spoons instead of forks, and adding protein powder or baby food for easier consumption and better nutrition. A recurring theme was the emotional shift from battling over healthy meals to finding peace in offering whatever brings pleasure, with many noting that their loved ones' tastes changed dramatically, diabetes sometimes improved unexpectedly, and that small acts of kindness like playing music during meals or sharing a favorite treat became precious moments of connection in an otherwise challenging journey.

@A myALZteam Member, I agree with you. My husband has few enough pleasures in life these days and so very little autonomy. If he wants to enjoy a slice of cake or buttery mashed potatoes, who am I to say no?

My mom at the end of her journey enjoyed watermelon and diced peaches. We tried baby food, smoothies, yogurt. Watermelon seemed to be her favorite.
Whatever works.. do that!!

I think when one reaches the late stage of dementia, one should be allowed to eat whatever one wants.

I let my wife eat what she wants and what she likes. Does it really matter?
