My husband was put on Aricept in 2020 and awhile after that Namenda was added. I am wondering because of what I have read, has it outlived its usefulness? He did well for about 4 years and now not so much. He constantly is delusional and has hallucinations of all types. I've heard they can at times increase that, although I'm not sure that's the cause as he was ok for years. Any thoughts?
My husband’s neurologist said that he may be getting even minimal benefits from it so she felt there was no harm leaving him on the Namenda. He hasn’t had any side effects from it. However, he had a terrible drippy nose from the Aricept so I stopped giving it to him. He was taking the Aricept for 5+ years and he’s been on the Namenda for probably 4 years. He does have more delusions lately, but I contribute that to the progression of the disease.
Ken’s GP says the same. I did try taking him off the Namenda around a year ago. He got to be pretty crabby, even in the morning, so I started giving it to him again and the additional crabbiness went away. As long as there doesn’t seem to be side effects and there’s no cost to us, for now I’m ok with it.
@A myALZteam Member Re: your Q&A question "How Long Should They Stay On Aricept And Namenda?" For whatever it's worth, the new Neurologist we recently saw said that IF my wife turns out to have LBD (like Howie), THEN Memantine would not be useful. I probably posted this already, but there is so much going on that I sometimes loose track.
My Dr told me recently that neither day helps in any measurable way. I was on Namenda, she said it was to me if I wanted to continue but research shows it doesn’t help. This just my Dr’s. She does research for Alzheimer’s, I do trust her so I stopped taking it.
No they don't : seems like a Medicare & pharma money grab!!
