Members offered compassionate support and practical strategies for managing a loved one's compulsive skin picking, acknowledging how difficult it is to witness without being able to help directly. Several members shared solutions that worked for them, including prescription creams, liquid bandage, arm sleeves, fidget toys, gentle verbal reminders, and even stepping away temporarily to avoid confrontation, while noting that the behavior often stems from unconscious nervous habits or OCD rather than intentional actions. A recurring theme was the importance of acceptance and redirecting energy toward gratitude for abilities still present, with members reminding one another to practice patience, seek medical help when sores become infected, and trust that some behaviors may eventually pass on their own.

Agree: don't think Hubs realizes he is picking either. EXCEPT if anyone else around he does not do it! ... Every day is a new beginning!!

My husband was picking and also would get defensive when I asked him to stop. It was almost like a nervous thing. I don’t think he even realized. tried the liquid bandage, arm sleeves and bandages. We ended up at the drs as it turned into impetigo. Used the script cream and bandages.

Hang tough!

2 sores on neck now - get bigger as hubs picks them to bleeding quite often. Very angry if I mention. Have creams & fidget toys : won't use them. So hard to sit in my chair while this goes on. I understand he has no reasoning and cannot control this OCD - but it's still hard. Thank God he can still go to the toilet, bathe, dress & does not wander. Praying for strength daily.

I use a prescription. It works better than the over-the-counter stuff. Still, it gets 95% clear and comes back! Put cream on yourself first. He may want it then. My son says, "Dad" whenever I pick. It does stop me, sometimes I don't think I even know I am doing it! (A little clicker works for me too).
