How Do I Plan For The Future Transportation Needs Of My Husband And Myself?
My husband was diagnosed in May 2018 with early onset Alzheimer's dementia, and in 2020 developed a seizure disorder, resulting in a spinal fracture. He is currently walking with a shuffling gait and some balance issues, but has not resumed use of the walker after recovering from the spinal fracture. He is fully incontinent and nearly non-verbal, and requires 24/7 care and assistance with all ADL's. I am trying to figure out if I need to purchase a vehicle that is equipped for a wheelchair.
Has he been seen either by OT or PT. If so I would talk to them. They can teach you how to transfer someone from a wheelchair to the car and vice versa. With my mother, she spiraled down so quickly from being able to walk to being bedfast that there was never a need for a wheelchair van.
I have ordered a rollater/transport chair for my husband. It can be used either way and folded up to put in the car. He walks very slowly and has to rest often because of knee pain. I’m hoping he’ll cooperate and be willing to use it.
Good luck with your decision about buying a vehicle equipped for a wheelchair. I’m sure it will be costly.
Thank you for sharing your experienced insight. I am an eternal optimist and a preparer...there is so little we can ACTUALLY do to direct the course of our lives in this role...
