Looking For A Prepaid Debit Card For My Husband
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

I am looking for advice on the best prepaid debit card to give to my husband with dementia . He needs to have something safe to use but that only has a certain amount of money on it to prevent him doing anything silly. He buys groceries and small things on his daily walks. I want to take his credit card away so we don’t have fraud issues.

I have searched online but still looking for advice. I would run the card so I want to set it up as my husband isn’t reliable with passwords etc.

I use TrueLink for my mom. It is a prepaid debit that you can choose how to fund. Plus you can set spending limits and block vendors if needed. $12 monthly fee. Fairly easy to report lost cards and transfer funds to a new one for like $5. You can also temporarily block activity or temporarily allow all transactions. I don’t care for the mobile app, so I just run it through Chrome on my phone and it works great.

I use net spend for my spouse. No monthly fee, set your amount and how to fund it. He has Lewy Body and can not handle access to too much money.

I bought a prepaid Visa at the local grocery store. I paid less than $3 in fees for a $50 card. I set it up online and it appears to come through Netspend. But to my husband it looks like a Visa card. He seems to be happy so far.

I think most bodegas or 7-11 type shops have prepaid CCs that you could load as needed. Ironically my husband also stops at the ATM or store for small purchases on his daily walks too! For example, I hid all the disposable razors because he shaves too hard and has also shaved off his eyebrows a few times. But he stops and buys them. I haven't felt the need to worry yet about him spending too much or fraud. But it's food for thought.

Thank you for all of your comments, I appreciate the feedback. My husband doesn't know how to use a charge card anymore and uses money instead, $1's and $5's only. He likes to give money to the grandchildren, the mailman, homeless people or anyone we run into. He doesn't buy anything at the store or tries to. I am thankful for that, espcially after reading all the comments. Life does have its challenges and we all have our different struggles, thank God for this site where we can exchange comments and knowledge. Blessings to ALL.
