I have tried to tell him that it is up to the dmv. He has had a simulator test at a local hospital, he failed. I was under the impression that the results would be sent to the DMV. It was not. He thinks I’m keeping him from driving out of meanness.
Same problem. He hasn’t driven in 3yrs but keeps telling me NO one is going to tell him he can’t drive. I’ve hidden the extra car key, and his truck in the garage has 4 flat tires. A real sore subject, but there are times he says he loves having me as a chauffeur. Never know the mood when we head out to go somewhere, I just get to the drivers side while he is locking the door. Gotta do what we have to do, right?💕
Margot, contact your auto insurance agent and ask for his/her help. See my post 2 hours before yours which talks about financial liability.
This is one of the toughest issues to deal with. Even though the doctors talked to him about not driving, he didn’t remember and either called me a liar when I reminded him or he’d say they (the doctors)don’t know him and whether or not he can drive. He’d just get angry. He drove longer then he ever should have. We solved some of it by having our daughter drive when we went on longer trips. Now we have a new car that I bought without him knowing. He hasn’t driven it or any car for awhile now. I get into the driver’s seat right away so he can’t. Sometimes he isn’t happy about it, but will get into the passengers side. We don’t talk about driving anymore. Sometimes in the evening, when he’s sundowning and more confused, he’ll ask where he parked the car. I just tell him that it’s in the garage.
You may not be able to explain it. My mom doesn’t even know how to start the car anymore because of push buttons and turn knobs. Maybe tell him it’s no longer safe, depends on what stage of disease he is in.
