Should Home Health Aid/companion Be Male Or Female.
A myALZteam Member asked a question đź’

widower age 73 who recently lost my spouse, living alone, children out-of-state, know that going forward will need a home health aide just for companionship; should I consider a male or female for someone to do outside activities with?

Hello, My name is Jeanne. A question for you?
You said you live alone. Are you in need of a
Home health care person? Im talking for your daily routine? Shower, dressing, feeding yourself? Like that??
Im asking because, I am 70, My husband passed almost a year ago. Also, I am a caregiver/companion for Seniors.
To answer your question, I had to ask the above questions to see what your needs are. Hope you dont mind.?
So, If you are in need of someone to help with your daily functions, laundry and groceries too, then yes, Id say you may benefit from a caregiver. For instance, I go to clients home twice a werk, 4 hours each time. I read to her, we go for waljs, laugh, talk, i take her to grocery store and drug store. I make sure she takes her meds and that she drinks plenty of water. Before I go, I make her something to eat. While we chat, I empty dishwasher, throw laundry in etc.

If you are able to care for yourself, Dont put yourself Out to pasture just yet. If you are lonely, how about a Church , or YMCA, card group. You never know when youll meet a friend. Are you able to walk in your neighborhood?
How bout a kitty? I have an old dashhound. Hes blind, and 16. I love him.

Man or Woman?? I cared for just as many men as I have women.

In general , youll find more women than men in the caregiving position.

If you are a Vet. Vetrans offer 11 hr a week caregiving in Michigan.

There are so many agencies now. Hopefully, youll get a referral to one over the other.

I hope I didnt misunderstand your question?
And If you need any other answers please reach out ok?? đź’śJDT

I think that would depend on what you and the other person are comfortable with. As far as activities, so many places have senior activities available. Of course, that may be affected by the recent surge in Delta variant too!. Here's a link I saw for your area that looked interesting:

Hi Jdt, have not researched it but during COVID last year when memory care facility locked down, retained a Health Care Management firm found on the Aging Life Care Association (ALCA) website. Since she was a registered nurse and required worker was able to visit Carol, take videos of her activities. This registered nurse is the one that suggested a “companion” through a Home Health Care company. Once they find you are not a “dangerous” person they may suggest another widow or widower that is living alone and needs a “companion”, if I didn't need a home health aide.
Just a thought to consider as I find my path forward without Carol.

Since your loss was very recent, Perhaps its your grief that asked your above question??
But if you are settled in your loss, and feel like socializing, ….. I wasnt aware home health care provided that type of service , unless you
Medically need care? JDT
