Incontinent
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My dad usually does okay in the bathroom but has been having accidents. Just wondering if it's the disease?

yes. They don't know when they have to go. Get Depends and pee pads for the bed and furniture.

It does come with the disease. We use Depends and they work well. I clean up the toilet and clean the bathroom a lot. More laundry too. At least he isn't cutting them up all day like he was on the 4th of July. Yipee

Of course incontinence is going to happen as Alzheimer’s patients lose their ability to control their body. They seem to not get the signal when they have to urinate so caregiver, you, have to ask once an hour if they need to use the toilet. They have yo be encouraged to sit there for a few minutes. If you see that he has had a bowel movement then you have to clean them with the moist wipes. Have them in the bathroom. It’s a privacy issue too; make sure to explain what you’re doing. At night it’s best to always use the Amends; they vary a lot so you have to experiment until you find the ones that fit best. They can be used all day so long as they are dry. Bathing is a problem in winter as it’s never warm enough to shed clothes s d get in the tub. We have to do our best: use a warm washcloth when you can after the wiping with moist cloth. We need to hear from others who have other coping suggestions, thanks!

Be certain he doesn't have a urinary infection . A UTI can cause sudden incontinence . Plus , in the elderly especially , a UTI can cause symptoms of psychosis .

I use the "depends" that are provided to us by the VA. I knew the major incontinence would be coming so I started him with the depends early on. He is very good about using them. I'm glad for a couple of reasons. 1. we couldn't go out any place for very long when he would have to find a bathroom (that was a BIG problem during Covid).
2. He spent A LOT of time in the bathroom because he seemed to always have the urge.
3. because he had the urge so often and in many instances had to hold it, he would not be able to completely void and either he would have to go within a short time and or his urine was backing up into his kidneys. (Now there is no hurry and he is at the stage where he is mostly comfortable using the depends and I can tell that he is emptying his bladder.
4. even if he was holding his urine, he would dribble as he was trying to get ready to use the toilet, which had shown up on his clothing - ok at home, but not out in public. Getting him used to using the depends has helped that situation a lot.
5. he still can get to the bathroom for bm's, but any time he goes into the bathroom, I follow him, check his what I tell him is his "protection" and change it if necessary. I have come across wipes from Aldi that are great, though not flushable, but that's what I use to clean him up after a BM. he is very good at letting me do that. (And I know that the BM incontinence is coming. we've already had a couple.)

This is all I will say for now. How it will be in a week, I don't know. If anyone has any other ideas that work, I (and probably many others) will be interested.
