At least in my case, my cognitive decline becomes more severe after dark. My caretaker wife Melody calls it sundowners. My cognitive ability is best in the early morning. To make the most of this my morning routine I get up at dawn. I drink 2 glasses of water to rehydrate. I celebrate another day of life by beginning the day with prayer. I often use free Jesus follower (Christian Morning Prayer) You Tube Videos to help me. I like the ones 10 minutes or less. My favorites are the ones from Beatrix von Watzdorf. They are a combination of guided meditation, soothing music, prayer, and help me feel hopefully and excited to face the day. Then its time to move! I started with sit down in a chair exercises that are easy and done sitting or lying down. I liked an app called Sit Fit! Very easy sit down exercises lead by 3 young women.
Then added more when I could. Now I use some Silver Sneakers exercises or free You Tube exercises by “Mere”. She has condensed workouts that only take 1 minute of doing them and they work! By then my 8 year old granddaughter Sophie shows up. Her mom, a school teacher has to go to work early so I get to spend time with a wonderful child that causes me to feel younger and healthier. Watch her get on the school bus. Then something just for the fun of it! Often just listening to music! Our love of music is something that Alzheimer’s does not seem to take away from us. My dad who had severe Alzheimer’s at the end of his life, was not communicating. Did not respond to us but if we put his favorite music on he would smile! Even right up until his death! By then my caring wife wakes up and we hug for a while! Hugs are so very powerful, connecting and confirming our loving relationship!

The national Alzheimer’s Disease Association has written to me and asked me to share some of the things we are doing at national meetings of people with early Alzheimer’s this year!

Aside from HORRIBLE, sundowners is a complete change as the light diminishes. For Mike he gets agitated. confused, sometimes psychotic, paces, wants to leave the house etc. Everyone is different. Read "The 36 Hour Day". This book explains it all.
