Sundowning is anxious agitated behaviour often with delusions and hallucinations and worsened by dim/dark light....sometimes also has verbal or even physical aggression.actions.

TALKING ABOUT GUILT... My ALZ husband died Thanksgiving Day and I'm eat up with guilt even today... I love my husband so much...the last six months it was like having a grown man as a baby... just a few days before he died he got up and i helped him dress and I brushed his teeth (now don't get me wrong we had days where he would not let me brush his teeth but this day he was very docile and sweet) I lfixed him his favorite breakfast a simple three egg omelet with lots of cheese and milk and two pieces of toast with butter and lots of jelly i went to the fridge to get him something to drink when I got back to the table he was grinding his toast, jelly side down, and just like that I went off on him.... I went to get paper towels to clean up the mess he poured his water in his plate everything was so soggy he couldn't eat it... So I'm just fussing... I got him in to his place in the living... He had started falling due to his COPD and it was just a few days after that that he was completely bed ridden after another fall and never regained consciousness...
So I have that guilt plus a lot of other times I live with. I'm really feeling down on this first Christmas Eve without my Mama and my husband... I remember last Christmas Eve we went to the candle light at our church and when I wasn't looking he got a candle snd refused to put it back it got lit and i spent the rest of the service watching him and that candle i didn't want him to set the church on fire LOL

Hi Sue2......I'm hoplng not to be rude but your consultant's advice is very wrong....sundowning is psychosis not depression but there is a form of depression (Seasonal Affective Disorder) that very much has a connection to daylight and seasons. SAD mostly occurs from Oct thru March (especially in northerly states/provinces/countries) and sometimes is referred to as February Blues....there is lots of info online. Along with antidepressants and light therapy (special ones for SAD) Vitamin D can also help along with getting as much bright lighting indoors and sunshine as possible. If you google SAD and dementia there is also info.

I only have sadness and not of the other symptoms with sundowning but I talked to Alz consultant and was told it still is sundowning because it happening in evening when it's dark. I didnt know that
