Feeling Sick
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone have any experience of someone feeling sick whilst they are eating? I give my 93 year old mum a balanced diet but more often than not now she starts feeling sick when eating and a few times has actually been sick. She does it at home and when we’re out in a restaurant often retching into her serviette. She used to have a huge appetite but now is never hungry but demands food at certain times of the day as that is when she has always eaten - hungry or not. She is 6 years past… read more

Hi, Jackie, and welcome. Good to have you with us. Your experience with Music for the Memory will be of interest and help to many. We found, at about that stage, that we had to start modifying the way Jackie’s food was presented, a process that continues to this day, but never because of nausea. Otherwise, a random thought - might your mum have some dental problem / discomfort that is stopping her chewing as she might previously have done? Other thoughts, constipation, hernia/twisted gut or other cause of restriction? Hope you find an answer because that can’t be great for her. All best, Steve.

Jackie has had Forticreme on prescription. It comes in varoious flavours and is like a custard that has been reinforced with trace elements - one pot nutrition. It certainly ticks the sweet and tasty boxes and got Jackie through a difficult period at the start of this year before we could get her back to “normal”. Could make a good sustenance base while you find the new hot spots. Good luck.

I wonder if she would respond better to eating sweeter saltier food? What were her favorite foods when she was able to cook?

Finger foods that she can eat by herself may help if they're available. @ Jakz58 does she like milkshakes? You can make special shakes of ice cream and a generic form of Boost or Carnation Instant Breakfast. Pudding is usually a big hit as are Hostess cakes or generic(s) Little Debbie's and such. Fresh fruit? Strawberries to eat from a bowl?

My husband has lost around 26 pounds during the past year. His appetite has drastically decreased and his sense of taste/smell is gone. Best wishes- Melissa

Agree with Steve but also wondering if there may be a swallowing issue beginning.
