Question About Keeping A Person Safe
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My husband has Alzheimer's. It's not too bad yet, he is still able to work. Sometimes he gets distracted and loses track of where he is. He will call me and I have to figure where he is by what he sees around him and tell him how to get home. I'm wondering what the best app for our Android phones would be so we will be able to know where each other are. Thanks in advance

My husband insisted on going to work every day. Once I got a phone call from his coworker about hubby not having a good day, I decided it was time to take the keys away. I had to make the phone call to his foreman. Sadly, he would continue to get up wanting to go to work. Now he just stays home and likes to watch TV all day.

I hate to say this, but it’s time to take the keys away. What are you waiting for? Be pro active and avoid something major. For his safety as well as innocent bystanders do the right thing, take his keys away. Talk to his doctor and ask him to break the news,it will help take the pressure off you.

In my state of Texas once someone gets the diagnosed with A. They no longer can legally drive. Insurance will not pay for any damages they may cause and you can be sued for damages. Plus it is the law that your auto insurance must be notified of the diagnosis.

It sounds like something is out of his normal routine. You first say “sometimes” he gets distracted and lost” , then you say it was the one time and that happens to all of us. If you have a concern enough to ask about a tracking device when he is driving , I would think its time to realize his ALZ is progressing. Distractions while driving are dangerous and can be deadly. Especially if this is a route he has been driving a long time. Then it is time to consider the next step as others have expressed with having the big discussion of no driving. There will be a time that even with you giving him directions he will not comprehend and trying to give him directions over the phone will not help. I know this is very, very difficult but for his safety and others on the road its what is best.
