Members reassured someone whose mother was experiencing frequent coughing and choking during meals that this is a common part of the dementia journey, while strongly encouraging consultation with a doctor or speech pathologist for proper evaluation and safety. Several members shared practical strategies they use, including cutting food into smaller pieces, pureeing meals to a softer consistency, using thickened liquids, feeding slowly with small bites and sips of water in between, and keeping the bed elevated during and after eating. A recurring theme was the importance of medical assessment, such as a barium swallow test to understand what's happening with swallowing mechanisms, and exploring resources like dysphagia courses to better recognize and manage these changes safely.

Great question about the chocking and coughing. Step one — make your MD or medical provider aware of this They will advise you on step by step instructions to incorporate new feeding procedures such as purified food and thickener for drinks. Blessings. Eddie

Talk to your doctor. A couple of rounds of speech pathology might help. But he probably needs to be evaluated to see if there's something going on or whether his muscles are just starting to weaken as a function of old age. They do that in your swallowing mechanisms just like in other parts of the body. A slow barium swallow will show very quickly what's going on and will help the doctor determine whether intervention would be worthwhile or not.

I did a course on Futurelearn about dysphagia mainly because Luke was unable to swallow when he was born but it helped me recognise the signs in my mum. Raise your concerns with GP.

Yes, my husband coughs and chokes terribly at times! I make sure his food is smashed to very soft consistency, feed small bites, feed slowly and give sips in water in between. I also raise his bed to its highest level when feeding and keep it there for an hour after eating. Hope this helps, Sushy!!!!!!!
