Looking For Skilled Nursing Care For Alzheimers For Two Near Lexington, NC.
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

Mom's been in care for 1.5 years; Dad nearly a year. Moved them in June because of substandard care; now Dad has fallen at least 10-12 times in a week and Mom in the hospital for a concussion from her second fall. Does anyone have any recommendations for a facility with skilled nursing care for Alzheimer's patients?

My sister and I ended up removing them from the Residential Center where they were - Mom by ambulance, Dad by car. They both spent a week in the hospital. Mom had a broken hip, fractured spine, multiple rear rib fractures, multiple blood clots. We put them both in rehab at Lexington Health Care Center. Mom died January 9th. Residential elder/Alzheimer's care is shameful. We visited 3 or more times a week and demanded care and attention for them both and still, we have a dead mother and a father who can't even straighten his legs enough to hold himself up. Unimaginable.

Thanks for your response. We're not having any luck. We need: skilled nursing care, Alzheimer's/memory care, Medicare/Medicaid approved, and an immediate opening (Mom should be discharged tomorrow). Most of the facilities on the M/M approved list are 1 or 2 stars out of 5. We feel there's no point moving her if the care isn't going to be any better than what she has now. So frustrating. Dad doesn't require a locked memory care unit but he's got to have skilled nursing and enough staff to make sure he's not going to fall again.

Try a memory Center. They are better and have more. Help.

Dad is now receiving Hospice care. They are amazing. He's had some wonderful days, now that he's getting kind and respectful attention. His mind will continue to decline, as will his involuntary muscle control. He sometimes forgets to swallow so choking is a constant worry. But he recognizes my siblings and myself and is grateful for our visits. He sometimes is aware that Mom has passed but continues to ask for her. They were married 68 years. Alzheimer's is a horrible disease, hurtful to the patient and his family and friends. Share the load as much as you can. Caregiving takes an emotional and physical toll.

Perhaps check with local Alzheimers group or even your Medical clinic. Someone will help you get on the right track! Good luck!
