Is Excessive Sleeping A Sign Of Near Death With Dementia?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

I am a new team member, just signed in. I have been caring for my 82 yrs old dementia suffering mother for about 3 years. She moved in with me about a year ago. She now sleeps more than 20 hours a day. She will only get out of bed upon request, eat, watch TV about 1/2 hour then go back to bed. She is confused at time, place and person. Still talks and jokes thou. She is incontinece of both. She is consistently loosing weight. Now I think her intake is about 500 calorie a day. Enrolled in Hospice… read more

Momma Nita Is usually awake 3-4 hours at a time then takes an hour or more nap through out the day. At night she is often up to use the bathroom or to check on the house so she is always tired. I encourage eating whenever she is awake but sometimes she tells me she doesn’t want anything. Dinner time usually starts with an argument when a plate of food is placed by her chair. We explain that she needs to eat something to take her pills so she does eat some. She is slowly gaining weight again. Although we discuss what I am fixing to eat she forgets in the 5 minutes it takes to prepare and argues that she doesn’t want it. I present food that I know she likes along with the meal. We Place prepared snacks she likes to eat by her chair such as chips, cookies, applesauce, puddings, cheese crackers, etc to tempt her. It is so hard to watch a loved on refuse to eat when they are loosing weight!

excessive sleeping may be a sign of pain. talk to your doctor about a routine analgesic to see if that helps

It sounds as though her body is trying to shut down. My mother was nearly 97 and went into the same mode. She was on hospice care and died within 6 weeks. She was never miserable or in pain. Just slowly slipped away.

My mother did come out of the everyday excessive sleeping mode. But now she is alternating between the day of unusually alert/active/very confused/hallucinating and the day of excessive sleeping. No changes of any medicine or environment.
