For all of us, sweet tastebuds are normally the last to go. think about it - as we age we add more spices and seasonings to foods to get them to taste better. As we age sweet keeps its strong taste while other food seems bland.

Yes sweets and salty foods become a favorite for brain failure. The taste buds become affected. Check out Teepa Snow on utube she explains this along with tips on dealing with eating behaviors.

My wife started eating toffees and fruit sweets to such an extent that she triggered Type II diabetes. We have had to eliminate these from her diet. Se gets a thin slice of fruitcake at lunch and some ice cream after dinner but the medication seems to be controlling the problem at this stage. Fortunately, she no longer goes hunting for sweets or chocolate and the fruit can be restricted.

Hutch, sweets and salty are not a sign of dementia but is common. As we age our taste buds 'die off'. We need sweeter and spicier to taste good. We took added salt out of our diet years ago when his GERDS was bad. I rarely use salt when cooking and never eat salted FF. Neither of us can tolerate salty food now. But, the sweet tooth is always there and since they can't remember they just had one, they (like many of us 'normal' people) will keep eating.
