Members shared experiences and advice about auditory hallucinations in aging parents, with several emphasizing the importance of ruling out urinary tract infections, which can cause confusion and hallucinations in older adults. Many members described their loved ones hearing music, voices, or sounds that weren't there, with practical suggestions including validating their experiences rather than arguing, gently redirecting them, and considering environmental factors like road noise or hearing loss. A recurring theme was the emotional toll of these episodes on caregivers and the comfort found in learning this is a common experience among families caring for aging parents with dementia or other cognitive changes.

In the last few days, my step mother has seen a little girl with a rash on her cheeks. She told me to wash her face. So I got up and said “Come on out here”. I stayed in the kitchen for a few minutes (made sandwiches for lunch and then went back out to the family room. Doris looked up and said “that’s better. She also asked when Brian was going to go home to his mother! Yesterday she told me to get the baby who is downstairs in the basement.
No baby, no basement!!

My mom hears a whooshing sound and we have blamed it on the building generator... she has recently told me she left her apartment because she continually heard the noise in her head, then she said she heard the same noise in the hallway and decided to go outside and heard the noise outside then she told me she was going crazy. This has been happening for the last few years since we moved her up from FL to IL by us. She also hears elevator music and now if she tells me again, I will tell her it sounds beautiful like the other person stated.
