That's a good question, can they detect brain changes?

Well since much of my work is abstract or story based this is interesting. I can already say that my depth perception has or is changing. I’ve read that Alzheimer’s changes start long before one knows he or she has it.
I wonder why we all don’t get tested for Alzheimer’s early on periodically. I would think having people know earlier would help even with research and such. Doctors do diabetes and cholesterol and such. Why not Alz.

What a wonderful passion to have! Being a mixed media artist is such a meaningful way to express yourself. It sounds like the question is: how does Alzheimer's affect the perception of colors and shapes?
Alzheimer's can affect how the brain processes what the eyes see. Even if the eyes themselves are healthy, the brain may struggle to interpret visual information correctly.
Here are some specific ways this can show up:
- Color distinction becomes harder — telling apart similar shades or hues can be tricky
- Depth perception and spatial awareness can be affected, making it harder to judge distances or shapes in space
- Contrast sensitivity decreases, meaning differences in brightness between objects become harder to notice
- Peripheral vision may narrow, affecting the full visual field
For an artist, these changes could influence how you work. Some helpful adaptations might include:
- Using bold, high-contrast colors that are easier to distinguish
- Working in well-lit spaces to compensate for reduced contrast sensitivity
- Choosing larger shapes and forms that are easier to perceive clearly
Many artists have continued creating meaningful work after an Alzheimer's diagnosis — art can actually be a wonderful form of engagement and joy. Keep creating! 🎨
