The caregivers put my dad in T-shirts and elastic waste pants. He was cold a lot so they layered with sweaters and sweatshirts. Loose socks and slip on shoes.
I dress my wife after her shower on the toilet. It works pretty well.

All I can think of is having him seen by a physical or occupational therapist. The therapist would need to be familiar with challenges of dementia. Maybe you could ask advice from your local Alzheimer's Association. They have a help line caregivers can call.
Sweatpants or light weight elastic jersey pants. If they sit on the toilet it's easier to change them so they don't loose their balance
Yes! Blue jeans, suspenders, and belts had to go!
