Any Ideas On Sleep For My Dad Throughout The Night?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My husband still hadn't put the switches up. I'm not electronically trained to do this. We had bought some dusk to dawn night lights. My dad did something with them. Haven't found them or his light good jacket that he put somewhere.

I have been giving him 10 mg of melatonin. Apparently my husband just told me it's not working! All this week, I thought it was working. So much for communications! It was my husband's ideal to bring my dad to our house. Now he seems totally against it… read more

My husband has been prescribed Mirtazapine 30 MG and it's worked really good. I have to make sure I give it to him by 6:00 pm. It also helps with the anxiety and restlessness in the evening. The going to bed later than your husband is a sign of your depression from being overwhelmed with your life issues. I stay up watching TV because it's the only quiet time I get by myself because my husband with dementia is a real handful when he's awake.

I wish I knew the answer. We have an appointment coming up in a couple weeks. The maximum dose of Melatonin is 10 mg and should only be used short term (4 weeks) unless the Dr orders it longer. (According to nih). Benadryl (diphrehydramine) helps some but it can make others jittery. It is the med that is in Tylenol PM.

The nurse at my dad's doctor said to try having him take donezil at night instead of in the morning. We will try that!

I don’t have a clear cut answer to your Dad’s problem sleeping but I think you must get him to sleep so you and your husband can get good sleep. It looks like your husband is taking the brunt when your father is wandering around the house wide awake. You need your husband’s help so it’s important to fix this sleep problem. I would talk to your father’s doctor and ask for his help!
