My son has Vascular Dementia due to a traumatic brain injury, and has a LOT of anxiety. His psychiatrist recommended the use of medical marijuana in addition to his prescribed medications. (It's legal in our state, with a doctor's prescription; and it's available as gummies, or liquid tinctures, or to smoke.) It does help him.

I’ve been giving my husband CBD/THC gummies for about a year. They are Delta-9, 5 mgs CBD and 5mgs THC in each gummy. I give one to him about 4 or 5 in the afternoon to help with sundowning. It works pretty well. He’s calmer and in a better mood, with maybe a bigger appetite. If he does get angry, it’s not as bad as it used to be. His neurologist is fine with it, saying it’s pretty mild compared to some prescription drugs.

Sundowning in a patient with dementia is not necessarily in the late afternoon hours only. It can happen at other times during the day. Her doctor may be able to prescribe a drug that will calm her without sedating her. Please ask about that.
