The most common approach is to smashup or grind pills and mix the powder in a susbtance such as apple sauce.
As already stated, checking with a pharmacist to be sure that mediation able to be administered crushed is the most common way. If the person with dementia is able to swallow, they can be given pills whole in a spoonful of food. I have used applesauce, ice cream, yogurt and even jelly! Both crushed AND whole. My mom went through a phase she refused her nighttime meds, and I crushed them, but she’d take them whole in the morning. I have also put them whole in a bite of ice cream sandwich for her to eat herself. Some medication may be able to be dispensed in a liquid form. There are also some that may be applied topically. If the patient has vitamins they don’t like, my mom did great with “gummie” vitamins for 2 years, then stopped taking them every day, so I give them intermittently and she will eat them. The doctor and insurance company may not agree on what’s needed, though, so there’s that.
