What Works When Dementia Patient Does Not Want To Drink
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My husband is in later stage but is still mobile, feeds himself, enjoys people but not very verbal. He just has lost interest in drinking any kind of liquids.

This morning I prepared 6 bottles of Ultima electrolyte drink with a goal of my husband drinking 1-2 a day. I added a little more drink powder than stated in the prep instructions. A benefit of preparing the drinks from room temperature bottles is that the powder disbursed in the water easier than in cold water.

As my wife’s illness progressed, I had to feed her and give her liquids through a 500 ml syringe. I would inert the end of the syringe in her cheek and slowly push the plunger on the syringe. Some of the liquid would gurgle out on her face, but most of it was swallowed.

Hi Sankay, I have had this problem for awhile and try different drinks and it’s hit or miss. I have to watch him drink and encourage him to drink more. I try different glasses and cups and had the most success when the container is clear and he can see it. I have a Keurig and have ordered hot chocolate, hot apple cider, chai latte tea, ice tea etc. I also make smoothies, give him Atkins protein shakes and give him fruit cups on different days. Someone on this site mentioned Liquid IV hydration electrolytes drink that comes in many flavors that I bought on Amazon. Its supposed to hydrate 2.5 times faster than water. It’s expensive and it’s a powder that you add to water but I tried different flavors and he likes it. I am not sure if it really hydrates like they advertise but when we are having a busy day if I can get 16 ounces of the iv drink in him I feel I have accomplished something. I still have to make sure he drinks as he will take a sip and put it down. When he like something like the hot chocolate he usually finishes it without too much coaching. I also cut cranberry juice in half with water and again with coaching he will drink. I keep telling him I have to keep him hydrated. He was a runner and I don’t know if in the deep recesses of his long term memory he knows hydration is important but he doesn’t fight me, but it’s one of the few things he doesn’t fight me on. I still haven’t gotten him to wear any incontinence products and I tried them all but he’s stubborn and as quick as they go on he figures out a way to take them off or pulls and complains until I take them off. Anyway staying on top of what he drinks helps me know when it’s time for the bathroom. Hope you find something that works for you.

@Jhnsn now that I think about it, your daughter makes perfect sense. When keeping my wife hydrated became a problem, eating a gummy would have also been difficult.
The electrolyte mix is really a good idea, and ‘food prep’ is essential. Whenever I had something that worked, I would stock up. As you’ve already discovered, the rules constantly change. I am always impressed how caregiver’s are constantly adapting, studying their loved one, what appeals to them and why…. Sunny Delight, genius!
Never lose that, it’s a beautiful trait and it will serve you well. 🤗
