My MIL was alone in her room at the nursing home and in the bed when she called for her dog to come get in the bed with her and warm her feet.

Did she have a special dog at one time? That could be an enduring memory. My husband always wants our cats in bed with him and says they keep him warm. I could see him remembering that if he is ever placed. I think I would get him a toy cat to hold on to!
