I am caring for my husband and now my brother-in-law who both have Alzheimer’s, just at different stages.
Any advice on how to manage them would be graciously received.
Hi Marpet, I have been thinking about your question for a couple of days now. I am on the other side of this journey as my mother passed away in January, but I have taken some time to think about what it would have meant to have a second person with dementia in my care. To be honest, the level of dedication and work that it took to take care of one person with dementia with little to no behavioral disruption was a lot. You are going to need help and a realistic picture of what the future might look like. One of the things that can be very challenging about taking care of someone with dementia is the unpredictability of the day - while schedules and plans are a goal, especially in the early and middle stages, emotions and behaviors can turn on a dime and the best laid plans have to be thrown out the window. Depending on your level of family involvement, financial means to hire in-home care staff and your own health, you are probably going to need a lot of backup and assistance. Things may feel manageable now, but the sooner you can make plans for the future, the better. I am not trying to sound pessimistic - this is going to be quite a challenge and I don’t think anyone could do it alone!!❤️
Praying that you can get help with your brother in law. Are you his poa. Contact your local alz office and dept of human services elder care. God bless you

Oh bless you, that sounds overwhelming. I think Rebekah is so right about figuring out how you will get help into the house. The stress of doing what we do for one loved one is so unhealthy. You deserve lots of assistance.
