What Do You Tell Friends When They Ask How Are You Doing After You Have Lost Your Spouse To Alzheimer's?

The person you have loved and was the most important thing in your life for 50 plus years and now there is a hole in your heart big enough to drive a truck through.

My husband died 8 months ago, after nearly 53 years of marriage. When people ask how I am doing, I simply tell them I am OK. I miss him terribly, but I would not wish him back unless he was restored to good health. No one deserves to suffer with the terrible disease called dementia. šŸ˜¢

I am in the situation. My wife of 44 years died five weeks ago. When Iā€™m asked how I am doing, I describe what Iā€™ve been doing to keep busy. Like Joe Friday, I put no emotional feelingin my response, ā€œjust the facts.ā€ In a way, I am sidestepping the real question ā€œhow are you feelingā€ because itā€™s still too painful to think about my feelings.

@A myALZteam Member I am still in the house that we bought in 1974. It is just the right size and all one level. My sister Carol, (four years younger) moved in with us because of financial difficulties due to Covid. She was a huge help during my husbandā€˜s last two years of life. I plan to stay here the rest of my life, if possible.

Three of my four brothers live within 30 minutes of my house. They are available to help out if I need advice about my house. Since my husband could do anything around the house, I sometimes feel helpless if something breaks or stops working. Life is good, and I feel very blessed.

Prayers and hugs to you. Are you still in a house? Iā€™m thinking you need to move. We just moved to a memory care center here in St Paul.

When my wife of 51 years passed I would tell others; I felt like I was going 1,000 miles an hour and hit a concreat wall. My mind shatering into thousand of peaces and I was unable to put them back again. Over time I improved.
