Nancy, yes, home caregivers are widely used to help reduce the burden on the primary care giver. I have a caregiver who spends time with my wife each Thursday for about six hours while I see my doctors or simply relax.
The main traits to look for in a caregiver is experience and prrsonality. Ideally, you would want someone who is caring and who has helped several other patients over an extended period (5 years or more). I have not worked with a male caregiver, but I inherently. think that women would be better suited for this job. So, look for someone who is: fun, careful, alert, experienced and not afraid of dirty jobs.
The link above will take you to a website listing highly rated care agencies in Illinois. Check them out by asking a lot of questions. Ask for references and then call them. Goodd luck.
Thank you so much, Jackie
I placed an ad in my local Nextdoor app and my towns web page. I found wonderful independent caregivers covering 20/24 hours each day. Good luck.
Nancy, I have the caregiver focus on personal hygiene for my wife. The caregiver will wash my wife’s hair in bed (special equipment needed), trim my wife’s finger nails, wash her upper body (I wash my wife’s lower body when I change her) and brush her teeth with a dental swab. I also have the caregiver feed meals (which I prepare) to my wife and give my wife her medication (which I prepare). I have the caregiver do the laundry, but no other, general housekeeping choirs. Finally, the caregiver stays close to my wife if I’m runnung errands and calls me if there is a concern.
My mom doesn't qualify for Medicaid. She has a Medicare Advantage policy through Aetna. I didn't think about her insurance possibly helping to pay. What kind of things does the aide do to help you out?
