Has Anyones Family Member That They Are Caring For Refuse To Eat Meat?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

Just tonight she picked through her macaroni with meat sauce and picked out all the hamburg. Won't eat steak or pork chops. Says, she doesn't like meat anymore but I think its getting too hard for hercto swallow it. I give her a protein drink every day as a supplement.

Over a year and a half ago, my wife started ‘chipmunking’ the meat in her cheeks because she had trouble swallowing it. At that point I switched her to a puréed diet. We went away from traditional meals to blending nutritious foods into a pudding like meal and adding things to make it taste good.
At that point she was unable to feed herself so she was already used to accepting whatever I fed her on a spoon.
Example of a meal I serve her…
Banana
Avocado
Prunes
Rice pudding
Yogurt
Spoonful peanut butter
Spoonful Nutella
… as I blend it I add a vanilla ensure or milk to get it to the right texture she can eat. I have 1 1/2 cup bowls with lids that I put it in to refrigerate.
She quit accepting a spoon so all her food and fluids are given to her in a 20ml syringe.
You can add or subtract anything depending on what you have… jelly, blueberries, applesauce etc.
Another meal…
I make a soup that is basically half vegetable and half protein.
I use frozen veggies from my garden or frozen veggies from the store.
Protein can be from tuna fish, chicken, eggs, cheese, spam and even garbanzo beans or a combination. I use bone broth or chicken broth as a base. Once again blend it down.
I copied this puréed idea from @A myALZteam Member. He shared it here two years ago in November. I am so thankful I was taking notes when he did. It has simplified our lives tremendously. We’ve been using this since March 2021. She’s maintaining her weight and it seems to be very easy on her digestive system.
The whole idea is to get the nutrition in them by making it taste good.

My husband ( now deceased) and myself do not eat meat, please know that a healthy diet can be maintained with out it ,I would suggest serving the food with out the meat. A protein drink is helpful other things are lentils, nut butters and other veggies . I am 78 and still very much alive so respect her choice and prepare her food acordandly

So far I don’t have this problem with Dan. He does sneak into the pantry looking for cookies or applesauce but he still eats. He has eaten the same exact breakfast for a year. He never wants anything else. My mom is in memory care with Alzheimer’s and she eats very slow. I don’t think she eats a lot but she is headed into the end stage of Alzheimer’s. Her conversations are hard to understand. I use picture books and photos to keep her interest along with her baby dolls. She is losing weight but not rapidly. She’ll be 93 in a week!

My husband simply won't eat any food -- meat , crackers, steamed veggies -- or anything that is 'tough' as he says. I have nearly switched him to small meals like Lean Cuisine because everything is cooked nearly to mush. I often make a casserole but make sure the meat is ground up or use a protein substitute such as tofu. I eat a mostly plant based diet (vegetarian) so I can easily give him a dish of what I eat, like lentil stew. It's amazing what he will eat now that he would never have eaten before -- like the lentil stew or vegetable soup with tofu. I make a dip / salad dressing out of soy milk, mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, and soaked cashews. Blended really smooth and then use it as a base for some casseroles along with cheese for a creamy sauce for pasta. Good luck! Sometimes his tastes change from day to day and I am scrambling to adjust.

I'm a vegetarian and find tofu an awesome source of protein. Tons of recipes on line. Hope it all goes well!
