I Would Like Suggestions On How To Get My Mother To Eat.

A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

My mother constantly complains that her stomach hurts. She's had all kinds of medical tests and doctors can't find anything wrong. She has lost about 40 pounds in the last year, and refuses to eat, so I'm thinking it may be hunger pains.
Has anyone else had that problem with their loved one?

My mom also has stopped eating and only loves sweets. So, we bring her milkshakes and any kind of cake which she likes. I know it's frustrating, but the best is not to push them to eat what they don't want. It will make them agitated, and we don't want her to have to go through that. She has dementia and we believe she is in her end stage which is very sad. She is 96 and I miss those talks. But she is well cared for, and my brother and sister and I go almost every day to see her and that makes her happy. That's what we do as long as she is not in any pain, but this disease is brutal not only for the family but🥰 also the patient.

My husband is difficult to get to eat. He’ll say he’s not hungry or just I can’t, I can’t. He’s lost so much weight that if he eats a quarter of what he’s given I’m happy. He rarely turns down ice cream or other sweets. So if that’s what he’ll eat that’s what he gets.

We are going thru the same thing with my mom. She drinks a lot, so we know she is well hydrated. She loves her milkshakes, cookies, sweets, so when we visit her, we brink things she might like. We found out that things don't appeal to her like they use to so we are finding at 96 we just give her what she would like. Try some sweets, chocolate, milkshakes. she may take those. Good Luck, its hard!!
