My husband digs it out with his fingers. I tell him to stop and push but he only says I have to get it out! Gross

Yes, they become unable to sense when they’re having a bowel movement. It is one of general loss of all senses. In our experience, we ate at a point where taste and smell are gone. I struggle to make food palatable; liquids(thirst?) are almost always accepted. For the toilet issues you must prepare for the worst: have tissues ready at all possible locations. Use the thick incontinence underwear, especially at night; they’re diaper style but holds a lot more than the pull ons. I order them online which saves money, service is pretty good so long as you order a week before you run out. For clean-up you must wear gloves, buy them by the hundreds also online; you can start with tissues, then go to the moist cloths which do s better job. Don’t flush them down toilet; pack them in little bags and put in the trash. Hope this will help you organize for when you have a mess to clean up, sometimes they come in the middle of the night!

The meds that he takes may also affect his bowel movement. I would mention this to the doctor. It’s not good for him to have to suffer like this. We all have issues with bowel movements so I feel for you having this come up daily. I’ve changed waterproof pads , sheets and underwear 4 times today!

He knows he has to go but can't get it out so uses his fingers to dig it out. I tell him to push, he tries but nothing comes out. I think he has been doing this for a long time but I didn't know. He has a wound vac on right now so I have to help get his pants down that is how I found out. He only gets a little out at a time. We get all dressed and start washing his hands and he's says I gotta go. I don't think he is constipated but I did give him a stool softner last night. I think that might have been a mistake so far this morning we've done this four times. I use thick incontinence underwear at night, wear gloves and moist cloths. I do buy them on-line and keep them stocked up. Thanks for your input.

He may be a bit constipated check with your dr to see if you can try giving him Senna its a natural laxative. You may want to add MiraLax too.
