Can talk therapy with a psychologist penetrate dementia? Has anyone used a psychologist or psychiatrist to help the dementia patient with anxiety, thought delusions and the other dementia bag-of-tricks?
Perhaps in the earliest stages after diagnosis, someone might be able to get some relief from seeing a therapist as a way to accept their diagnosis and feel like they have someone to share their feelings about it. But there is a point at which, between failing memories and becoming a person primarily driven by whatever they are experiencing in the moment, therapy probably wouldn’t be effective. Having said that, I have used and continue to use a lot of “tricks” to help my Mom stay calm and reduce her anxiety. Some I learned when I was in grad school for counseling and psychology, some just from working to deal with my own anxieties. My Mom isn’t able to walk anymore, so several times a day I am holding her while we move from chair to chair to toilet to bed, etc. If I feel her starting to be anxious, I can hold her close and breathe deeply so that my body moves with hers - it makes her breathing slow down and she breathes deeper as well. She isn’t doing anything other than copying me, but it helps her! I also will hold both her hands and look at her and do “intentional breathing” - breath in for 8, hold for 8, breath out for 12 - and she calms down. Our loved ones react to our emotions and behaviors, so it makes sense that when we are doing things to reduce anxieties, if we physically connect with them, they should be able to calm down as well. There are, of course, people who aren’t able to respond that way and will need other things, up to and including medications to help them. Hope this helps!❤️
I had the best luck using music and drives through a scenic park for calming my husband. I first used his favorite songs from early adulthood but then found that music without words was best. It was less for him to process than a fast moving show on TV.
His dr. can help with the anxiety, with an anti depressant.
I heard seroquell can help with delusions and better sleep
Thanks, JF2. I value your opinion. That has been the gist of the responses.
