Is Just Me Or Do You Ind Eating Is A Major Challenge For Alzheimer's Patients,?
A myALZteam Member asked a question 💭

Mom is 93 and still feeding herself, walking with a walker but chews and chews her food but then spits it out. Seems to have forgotten how to swallow. Please help.

Connie, I have not yet had to face this problem with my wife. I did some research in anticipation of my wife developing swallowing problems. I found two members of this group, Steve Nuttal and Mark Lowery, who have both been through this situation with their wives. Perhaps you should reach out to them and provide some additional background on your situation. Good luck.

Thank you for your input. Mom can swallow cookies and cake .😅 She feeds herself but claims the regular food will not go down.

Swallowing is not an automatic function I found out. Mom would chew and chew until I reminded her to swallow. Ate my food with my left hand and fed Mom with my right hand until I had to feed her alone. There were too many distractions at the table for Mom to handle well (two young girls of mine). At 93, one never knows. We had to puree our foods for Mom. Maybe something like soup will get her to swallow by herself. Something not chewy. Mom just needed calories by any means at 90lbs so she had plenty of ice cream which somehow she swallowed without an issue. Mom let me know quickly when she had something in her mouth she didn't like. Many blessings to you
