My mom has lost 6 pounds in the last month. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to feed her. She won't open her mouth. When she does and I get food in there, she puts it in her cheek. I give her frequent reminders and try to show her what to do (ie. open your mouth, chew your food, push the food to the back of your mouth, etc).I know a feeding tube is an option, but I'm not sure we're at that point yet. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions of things to try?
Will she drink? There are great protein shakes on the market. GNC had great trained professionals who can assist you.
You could try to “shock” her into reacting to stuff in her mouth. I’ve had success with both citrus dressings and with offering food as frozen crystals. I’m not shy about massaging Jackie’s jaw either. That is quite often necessary to get her started. If you get her going, then you can load her food with calorie rich goodies - cream, cheese, mayo, choc spread etc. Good luck. S.

I started feeding my mother boost puddings.
My dad enjoys milk shakes and ice cream.
